The Living Sea

The lives in this world are connect more than what many people think of. Our actions can make drastic changes in the lives of the many species that exist in this world in this world, but the changes that nature bring back on us, in the same manner, can also have drastic changes, and even deadly, consequences. Now, we are placed in this world just to simply exist or there is something greater in each and one of us? I believe that we have a great power that we still haven’t fully developed.
One of the most important part of this world is the ocean. It provides the world with many, if not all, the things that every living organism needs to survive. Also, if one studies science one can notice that all living beings that roam the land, including the human beings, come from the ocean. This is the power and greatness that the ocean has, but the people have forgotten this and act in such a way that harms and destroy this precious realm that is the home of many organisms. This is where the quote from the documentary "The Living Sea" comes to place: “We can’t protect what we don’t understand. We live because the sea lives. What we understand most profoundly, we love.” This happens in many areas of the world but I will speak of Puerto Rico. In the island, one can see the trail of many people to bring new species of marine life to the island in order to attract “tourists”, the dumping of human wastes and other chemical to the bodies of water and the constant “city growth” that affect all of the environment. The people doesn’t see the consequences now but this action will come back to us affecting the lives of many. By disrupting the ecosystem one can create an unbalance in the fish’s lives that the people of Puerto Rico eat, contaminating the water the one drink with chemicals and destroying reef that are the lungs of this world.

All of this is happening around the people of Puerto Rico and it may seem disastrous but all is not lost. They can make more strict laws that protect the bodies of water, the people can go to beach and collect the trash left by other, the people can alert the right organization of any crime committed on bodies of water such as waste throws and chemical spills. They can also make the people more conscious of what are the consequence of their actions on the lives of many organism. By doing so Puerto Rico can bring the island to a better future.
The human being has a special connection with what surrounds him but has an extreme fascination for what he yet doesn’t know. This is one of the reason why many human being are so obsessed with nature and the ocean. A place were many creatures live and haven’t been

Natures’ Revenge

The people are now seen the sign and living the consequence of the acts that society have done to this world. Acts that are slowly destroying and killing the environment that surround us. Now, in our time of reflection, humanity must act upon this. We have to change our actions before it is too late.
In the northern part of Guayama there is an area that contain a vast amount of mangrove trees. A beautiful ecosystem full of endangered species and wildlife beyond compare. They are also the nursing home of many marine creature. A study made by the WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) shows that one can find 25 more species of marine animal in a coral reef that is near a mangrove forest than in one that doesn’t. They also serve as a barrier, not letting high quantities of sediment and stopping the pollution from reaching the seas and the coral reefs. It is not far fetch to say that the mangroves are the epicenter of the marine life. Now they face an even bigger problem, men with the power of technology.

A company that helps to give energy to Puerto Rico bought part of the area. Instead of protecting the area they dried the swamp up, cut the mangrove to place solar panels.  This is now causing the ecosystem of the area to become unbalance. Examples of this can be the increase in the rate of extinctions of many species that called the area their home, with an alarming drop in the levels of water and causing the death of many other mangroves in the area.

Now more than ever, the citizens are been call to open the eyes and see the things that are happening around us. Look and act on the things that surround us with the goal to find what the best thing for this world is. To understand the full meaning of life and try to live by it. Because, ironically, nature most suffer in order to protect it.
